If you’re an avid DVD or Blu-ray collector of movies past and present, there’s one occasion fast approaching that beckons some titles on the shelf to be played on your 8-channel home entertainment system. Forget about taking the night out. Just about every couple and family has some kind of Halloween celebration taking place somewhere. And the kids are sure to get into the usual Trick or Treat escapade in the neighborhood. So what do you do on Halloween night? Watch a horror flick at home.
Renting one is an option. But be sure to visit Blockbuster early as they can be gone the closer you get to Halloween night. For sure, you are not going to be the only one watching a movie on fright night. Lucky are the stereo and multichannel buffs as they have movies sitting on their shelves.
Those movie titles won’t do much good unless visited form time to time. Halloween gives you a good excuse to take stock of that DVD or Blu-ray title that have given you some fright the first time to saw the movie. There’s a good chance seeing it again won’t be as frightening as the first time. But some folks swear they get the same goosebumps and adrenalin rush watching some horror flicks every time.
Scary Movies Forever.
You could start with some good laughs from the episodic Scary Movie series. Or get right into the really scary meat of some of the best horror movies of all time. Forget about those Dracula flicks of Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee or those Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde stuff. They are more romantic than anything else. If you are into classic films in the horror genre, nothing has ever approached the horror of the first vampire movie in Max Shreck’s 1922 Nosferatu.
Just looking at the bald vampire character is already enough to give you the creeps. There’s a nice behind the scene recreation of that movie with Klaus Kinski in the 1979 Nosferatu the Vampire movie retelling how the actor actually lived the vampiric lore to a T. Not as creepy as the first but just as delightful on Halloween night.
Have Fun this Halloween
You don’t really have to be so serious about being scared stiff on Halloween. The idea is to have some fun and a musical about Halloween never fails to be an appropriate diversion. No, it’s not the Phantom of the Opera. The music on that film is better listened to than to watch the latest Gerard Butler movie incarnation. If there’s a theater performance of the Andrew Webber classic, catch it. The goosebumps you get while watching the phantom row the boat carrying Christine while candelabras are emerging from the underground river cannot be duplicated elsewhere. Certainly not in the Gerard Butler movie.
But rather, the more insanely macabre movie to watch this Halloween and every succeeding Halloweens just might be about Halloween itself. It’s Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse’s Bride. Your choice. They’re both whimsical, grotesque, hideous, and just lovely for this time of the year. The nice thing about either is you never fail to splash a smile on your face after watching one. But go ahead and indulge in the really horrific stuff like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, if that’s what will make Halloween more memorable. GP
