The term "Old Time Radio" refers to entertainment programs were broadcast to the public since the 1920's and early 1960. The first station U.S. commercial radio (KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), began broadcasting in 1920 times. In 1922, the first regularly broadcast old time radio programs had begun. Until late 1920, the music programs were more popular with shows highlighting opera, big band, jazz, classical and popular music.

In the 1930's, the series first appeared during the day with romance and other items that appealed to the typical American housewife. Most of these programs were sponsored by soap products and that is where the term "soap opera" originated. Radio programs as "The Cisco Kid "and" Captain Midnight "is broadcast in the evening to entertain the kids when they came home from school. Comedy series began to appear as the "George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" and "Jack Benny Show," which both began in 1932. "Amos N Andy" actually hit the airwaves in 1928! Then in the 1940's, an almost endless list of comedy programs joined those pioneers and comedy shows became the most prolific genre until the end of Old Time Radio.

In 1947, 82% of people in the U.S. listening to the radio on a regular basis. Old Time Radio shows are not like most audio books of today where someone with a pleasant voice that you read a book. Old Time Radio broadcasts were productions of television programs today. No There were sound effects, multiple actors in multiple roles, and scripts of the first level! A surprisingly large number of these recordings are still in existence today thanks mainly to the collector / fans who purchased through the years. Because of his age, most of them are available free on the web or a very low cost on a CD (in mp3 format) from numerous vendors.

In the mid 1950's television became the king of entertainment radio and becomes a mostly music format. Not shown, however, that continued for some years and some of them even went on the air at the same time as a television version of the program.
