What exactly in the Rocky Horror Picture Show?

I know its a movie and a show. There’s a theater in Santa Monica that has it every saturday at 1am. and i’ve always wondered: Is it just a regular movie in a theater like any movie today? because my friend told me something about dressing up like characters when you go there and live performances (from actors and audience)? so i don’t understand..?

Rocky Horror began as a stage show, in the UK. It was adapted for the screen, in the 70s. The original stage show involved the audience, and actually put the audience into the show. So, fans of the original show began creating audience participation for the feature film version.

There will be a live cast, at almost every showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show (RHPS). This live cast will perform the scenes, as they appear on the screen. There will also be hecklers in the crowd, who most likely are plants by cast, however, there are also long-time fans who also will be hecklers.

The fans memorize every line in the entire movie, and actually yell things during the film, in relation to the dialog in the film. Much of the things they yell involve curse words, pornography, politics and pop-culture. There are actually audience participation scripts, at various sources online, however, you can pretty much go once and figure it out. The Special Edition DVD even includes audience participation dialog.

Often a theatre will sell a participation kit, or prop kit. Many fans will also bring their own props, but not all theatres allow this. For example, many theatres do not allow you to throw any form of food, such as rice, prunes, hot dogs or toast, even though they were intended for audience participation. These foods often damage the theatre, the screen costumes, and also attract bugs and rodents, so many theatres now ban them. However, people now throw things like confetti or popcorn.

The basics in any prop kit, are a squirt gun, a piece of newspaper, a lighter / flashlight, noise makers, party hats, one latex or pink rubber glove, toilet paper (preferably Scott’s brand), playing cards, and even the bag itself can be inflated and popped, at the end of the film.

Arrive early, because there is almost always a pre-show. A pre-show is a special performance by the live cast. They may sing and dance, or perform some semi-pornographic ritual. There is also a cherry-popping ceremony for virgins. A virgin is anyone who’s new and has never been a showing of the RHPS. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it on DVD, if this is your first time in a theatre, you are a virgin. Often they will draw a V on your forehead with lipstick, and may make you do something embarrassing on stage. The audience will also yell, “POP.”

The cast will teach you how to dance “The Time Warp.” The cast may also explain how to use the props.

The Rice was originally intended, for the wedding scene, at the beginning, however many people now throw confetti. Next you’ll use squirt guns to make it rain and you’ll hold the newspaper over your head, to stay dry. You will hold up your light, when they say the phrase “There’s a light”. You will turn off the light, when they say, “in the darkness.” Only lamers still shine their light after they say “in the darkness.”

Next, you’ll wear your party hat and use your noise maker, during the party scene, in the mansion. You will dance The Time Warp, and then you will snap your glove, when Frank does, in the Lab.

When they yell, “Great Scott” you will throw your toilet paper (preferably Scott brand toilet paper. Get it Scott Brand; Great Scott. Yeah its stupid, but fun.). At the end of the film, Frank will sing about cards. LIke, cards of sorrow, cards of shame. At this point, you will throw your playing cards, but be kind don’t throw them at people, just in the air. There is a scene earlier, where they say, “You better not hurt her “Frank-N-Furter.” This is where you would throw hot dogs, but many theatres no longer allow this. You can call your theatre and ask Almost no one allows prunes. They really stain chairs and screens. “Dana Andrews said prunes give him the Runes, is a line. This is where you would throw them, if you had them. Still, its a good way to get kicked-out of the theatre, so best to just avoid them. The Prop Bag can be inflated and popped, when Rocky gets shot. Some people even inflate and pop the gloves, but that doesn’t work as well. Actually, a love of people like to inflate the gloves and toss them around, during the film, like a beach-ball. Not really related to anything, just fun.

As for costumes, maybe half the people there will dress-up or will do Stage Show make-up. Many people even wear costumes from the Sequel Shock Treatment, or they wear completely unrelated weird costumes, that don’t make any sense at all. The costumes may include men dressing like women, and people wearing nothing at all, but lingerie or gold underwear. Expect a lot of French Maids. It’s a popular costume. Still, you don’t need to wear a costume. Its not required.

Basically, its a musical, with dancing,, humor, sci-fi, rock-n-roll, horror, and sex (both heterosexual and homosexual). Mostly, its just a party.

Best of luck. :-)
