horror movie phobia

Imagine waking up to a bright morning with a smile on your face. You hop out of bed and headed to the bathroom to brush your teeth. But when you opened your mouth, your seemingly bright and happy morning turned into a nightmare. What you saw in the mirror seems like something out of a horror movie. It wasn’t your face or your hair. But it was something inside your mouth; something black and ghastly. It was your tongue and it’s black.

You hurriedly run for the phone and called your dentist in Orange County. You don’t care whether it’s early and he’s still probably curling up in bed. You have an emergency.

Black Tongue Discoloration

Fortunately, a black tongue is something that you don’t need to worry about. It may be an ugly sight, but there is no reason to be alarmed. It is treatable and has no ill effect on your health.

One cause of black tongue is when the papillae or the bumps in the tongue grow abnormally long. This causes foods and bacteria to be trapped in the tongue. As more and more food debris and bacteria are trapped, the tongue changes color and often turns to black. Although it does not cause a serious problem, a black tongue is something that will surely cause you to rush off to your dentist in Orange County.

Several factors contribute to your chance of getting a black tongue. These include bad oral hygiene, tobacco use, and too much drinking of coffee or tea. If you are receiving treatment and taking antibiotics, it can also lead to black tongue. Some mouthwashes especially those that have hydrogen peroxide are also believed to cause tongue discoloration.

Black Tongue Treatment

When faced with a black tongue problem don’t fret. There’s one simple solution to treat this condition-brush your tongue. Every time you brush your teeth don’t forget to brush your tongue as well. As more bacteria often resides in the tongue than in the teeth, brushing it at least twice a day will help you reduce bacteria presence. You can use a tongue scraper to reduce the size of the papillae and prevent black tongue all together.

Also, it’s best to reduce tobacco use and your coffee and tea intake. Drink plenty of water as well and rinse the mouth every so often throughout the day. If the discoloration is not resolved, it may be time to consult your doctor to find out if there are health problems that may be affecting the immune system.

Remember that although a black tongue is something that doesn’t cause serious health problem, it’s something you don’t just ignore. You don’t want to go out looking like a character from a bad horror movie scaring children around. Talk to your dentist in Orange County to know better how to take care of your tongue.
