Motto: When the earth spits out the dead, will rise to suck the blood of the living.
The other night I dreamed of the perfect film. It was a strange sleep, because the perfect movie starred Mia Farrow sister and a guy who looked a bit like Jack Elam. It was also made in Italy, so it was really bad dubbing a fact. Then there were the zombies. But not only normal, shuffle-all-and-zombies-eat-your brain. No, they were zombies fighting sharks underwater. That's right – sharks. And do not forget the nudity. Lots of nudity for no apparent reason. Mediocre performance. Mediocre special effects. In truth, the perfect movie was not what I expected it to be.
Morning I woke up and realized that my dream was actually more of a nightmare. No sound movie fan would arise nonsense like being anywhere near perfect. Everything had been a mistake terrible, terrible. Then imagine my surprise when I realized my perfect movie actually existed. His title? Zombie.
The film begins as a drift boat, apparently abandoned in the port of New York. A couple of policemen were sent to investigate, and one quickly becomes a snack for zombies lurking on board. It turns out that the boat belongs to a missing scientist, so he quickly takes her daughter to concerned, Ann Bowles (Tisa Farrow, sister to Mia), in the scene. She meets Peter West (Ian McCulloch), a nosy reporter looking for a great story, and the couple decide walk the chain of Caribbean islands, the last known location of the father of Ann. Shortly after arriving, they find Brian (Al Cliver) and Susan (Aurette Gay) who are willing to take them to the isolated island of Matul on his boat.
Along the way, Susan decides to strip down to just a thong and diving. She meets a zombie under water-dwelling, but luckily for her, a shark that seems to struggle with zombies, allowing it to escape (I'm not making this up, folks!). Once they arrive Matul island, the quartet to meet Dr. Menard (Richard Johnson), who is working feverishly on a cure for rare disease ravages the island. It seems that this disease is killing the locals and then making them rise from the grave in search of human flesh. From that moment, all hell breaks loose.
I realize that The summary is a bit long, but Zombie takes forever to actually get all the characters in the same place. For a good part of the film, which switch between characters principal and Dr. Mena. And once we're finally all together, the climax of the film is almost in sight. But by then, will probably find that you and any person more are in full mystery science theater mode. It's just one of those movies that is more enjoyable when you're making fun of him with his friends.
And believe me, there is much to make jokes. The first example, of course, being the clash between a zombie and a shark hungry water. While it is certainly original, pure stupidity of the stage, no doubt, laughter obtain the most serious zombie fan. But what else would you expect from the Italian director Lucio Fulci? Although his films have occasional moments of genuine creepiness, are often just downright silly. Of course, he was always working with a budget of about five dollars, so maybe it was not entirely his fault.
There is also the fact that everyone in the film against a zombie seems to freeze and stay there, perhaps even tilting your neck to one side to give the devil a clear path to his jugular. What the hell happened to run for your life?! I know that the dead would be a scary sight, but I imagine the possibility of being eaten alive would be even more terrible. I know it's only a horror movie, but I like to see a realistic behavior shown from time to time.
On a more positive note, fans of gore and nudity (count me among the crowd) is not going away completely disappointed. Women in the film are above average, and violence certainly lives up to reputation established by the Italian cinema. We were bullet wounds in abundance, many of the arteries cut by the teeth undead, and even a nice scene involving the woman balloon wooden eye and a door battered irregular.
But if you're a fan of these things, expectations should probably plummet. Zombie is good for cheap thrill and not much else. Anyone looking for artistic merit will be left scratching their heads (unless you define artistic merit as the later addition of an opening and closing scenes set in New York to capitalize on the success of Dawn of the Dead). It's the classic Italian horror film, and that is the highest praise and insult I can give.
